Governor Schwarzenegger Honors

California Caregivers

SAN FRANCISCO—In honor of National Family Caregivers Month in November, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued a statement recognizing California’s family caregivers who “demonstrate extraordinary love, dedication and courage in helping their love ones maintain independence and self-sufficiency, while delaying or preventing placement in institutional settings.

“California remains at the forefront of family caregiving, with 11 Caregiver Resource Centers now offering services in every region of our state,” the Governor’s message states.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the landmark law that established the innovative Caregiver Resource Center (CRC) system throughout California—the first community based organization in the country to address the needs of caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s and other disabling conditions. Kathleen Kelly, Executive Director of Family Caregiver Alliance (the Bay Area CRC), said she appreciates Governor Schwarzenegger’s recognition of caregiving families and of the Caregiver Resource Centers’ accomplishments.  “Especially during this holiday season,” she said, “we thank those devoted families who bear much of the burden of long-term care.”

Often described as a “lifeline” by caregivers, the CRCs assist families in coping with the intense stresses—emotional, physical and financial—of long-term caregiving. California’s system has been honored as a leader in the development of other state caregiver services, and served as a model for the National Family Caregiver Support Program, passed as part of the Older Americans Act in 2000. The CRC system is under the direction of the California Department of Mental Health, led by Dr. Steve Mayberg.

The Governor’s message concludes by saying, “This November I am pleased to join my fellow Californians in commending family caregivers for their outstanding work and exceptional dedication.”  To read the full text of the letter, go to   http://www.caregiver.org/caregiver/jsp/content_node.jsp?nodeid=1270.
