1. Georgia reports cost savings due to availability of HCBS
The Community Care Services Program (CCSP) saved Georgia taxpayers more than $248 million in fiscal year 2004 by helping more than 14,000 consumers eligible for nursing home placement to remain in their homes or communities, reports the Georgia Division of Aging Services. CCSP provides a range of home and community-based services, including the provision of respite to support family caregivers of consumers. The announcement of these cost savings highlighted the experiences of several family caregivers. Details:

2. Utah report on family caregiving
The Utah Department of Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services has made available "Family Caregiving in Utah: A resource guide for family caregivers." The publication provides information that would: assist families to self-identify as caregivers; provide details about support services available in the state; and help families in developing a caregiving plan. 3. Testimony on the NFCSP
In a hearing held by the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina Carbonell testified on a range of programs administered by the U.S. Administration on Aging, including the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP). In describing the program, Secretary Carbonell states that it is "the single most important new provision of the 2000 reauthorization [of the Older Americans Act], and most significant accomplishment of AoA and the aging network since 2000, is the implementation of the National Family Caregiver Support Program." 4. AoA profile of older Americans includes caregiving
The U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA) has made available an electronic version of a profile of older Americans which includes the latest statistics in key subject areas. It also provides a section on caregiving, as well as both narrative and statistical charts. The 2004 edition is only available online. View:

5. HHS releases brief on Medicaid estate recovery
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has made available the policy brief "Medicaid Estate Recovery." The brief is one of five commissioned by HHS/ASPE on Medicaid eligibility policies for long-term care benefits. It provides an overview of state Medicaid Estate Recovery programs, which enable states to recover, from the families of Medicaid consumers, public spending for Medicaid long-term care recipients. The funds are recouped from the estates of those recipients after their death. Download:

6. Federal legislation addresses respite within the VA
New legislation (S. 1189) has been introduced in the U.S. Senate which would require the Secretary of the Veteran's Affairs (VA) to publish a strategic plan for long-term care, among other activities. The legislation would require the report to address non-institutional options for assistance, including the provision of respite care. Bill info:

7. AARP publications on family caregiving issues
AARP has made available two new facts sheets on caregiving issues. The first, "Caregiving in the United States," discusses the prevalence of caregiving in the U.S., demographics of caregivers and care recipients, working caregivers, and caregiver supports. "Family Caregiver Support Services: Sustaining Unpaid Family and Friends in a Time of Public Fiscal Constraint" is the second fact sheet and is co-authored by FCA staff. It describes publicly funded caregiver support in the United States, the types of services that are available, and eligibility requirements for these. View:

8. Data profile on family caregivers
The Center on an Aging Society at Georgetown University has made available the third in a series of Data Profiles on informal caregivers of older persons, "How do Family Caregivers Fare? A closer look at their experiences." The profile provides an overview of the physical, emotional, financial, and social experiences of primary family caregivers. More info:

9. Caregiving article in The Gerontologist co-authored by FCA staff
The June 2005 edition of The Gerontologist includes "Measuring the Values and Preferences for Everyday Care of Persons With Cognitive Impairment and Their Family Caregivers." The study describes the development and psychometric properties of a 24-item scale to be used in both research and practice settings that assesses the everyday care values and preferences of individuals with cognitive impairment and the perceptions of family caregivers about their relatives' values and preferences for care. The article was co-authored by Lynn Friss Feinberg of Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA). Abstract:

10. Burden among caregivers of persons with mild cognitive impairment
The May 2005 edition of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry includes "Caregiving burden and psychiatric morbidity in spouses of persons with mild cognitive impairment." According to the authors, "although caregiver burden and psychiatric morbidity levels were lower than those typically observed in family dementia caregiving samples, our findings suggest that [mild cognitive impairment] caregivers have already begun to experience distress in association with elevated caregiving burden. These individuals may be ideal targets for selective preventive interventions to maximize their psychological well-being as caregiving burdens related to their spouses' cognitive impairment increase." 11. Women and caregiving
"Depressive symptoms of caregiving women in midlife: The role of physical health" appears in volume 17, issue 1/2 of the Journal of Women and Aging. According to the authors "this research examined the relationships between providing assistance to aging family members, caregivers' age, caregivers' perceptions of their physical health, and caregivers' depressive symptoms."
