7.  Developing Better Long-Term Care Public Policy

The National Academy of Social Insurance has published a report detailing the current long-term care system of formal and informal care supports, and the policy shortcomings of the long-term care system. 8.  Caregiver Involvement Can Have Major Impact on Disease Outcomes for Older Colon Cancer Patients

A report released by the Alliance for Aging Research indicates that colon cancer patients ages 65 years and older may fare better if they have a caregiver actively involved in their medical care. Of the more than 100 oncologists surveyed, 77% agreed that patients experienced better disease outcomes with a caregiver’s involvement due to increased communication, and 90% felt that the caregiver had a major to moderate impact on the decision-making process related to the disease management of these patients. The survey was part of the “Caring for the Aging” program to educate colon cancer patients and their caregivers about the critical role of a caregiver in managing the disease. The Medicaid support services that are available for care receivers and their family caregivers are summarized. The report also describes the fiscal challenges that states and the Medicaid system will face as the nation’s population ages, and policy options that states are considering to reduce Medicaid spending growth.
