A salute—complete with trumpet fanfare and Master of Ceremonies in formal attire—greeted more than 400 family caregivers as they gathered in downtown Los Angeles on November 5. The participants came together to attend a conference designed not only to teach practical caregiving skills, but also to celebrate National Family Caregivers Month and to recognize two decades of service by California’s innovative system of Caregiver Resource Centers.
At the conference, host organizations (with expert assistance from emcee Bob Phillips, former CEO of Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center) offered a celebratory tribute to the families who care for loved ones disabled by long-term illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s, brain injury and other conditions. Presentations in both Spanish and English from top experts in medical, public policy and social service arenas followed.
Salute to Family Caregivers was sponsored by the state’s 11 nonprofit Caregiver Resource Centers (CRCs), which are funded by the California Department of Mental Health. Each CRC offers a full complement of free or low-cost services designed to assist family caregivers of adults with disabling health conditions. California was first in the nation to develop a statewide network of support services for family caregivers.
