Alzheimer's rural care health line: Linking rural caregivers to cognitive-behavior intervention for depression

Citation Glueckauf, R. l., Stine. C., Bourgeois, M., Pomidor, A., Rom, P., Young, M. E., Massey, A., & Ashley, P. (2005). Alzheimer's rural care health line: Linking rural caregivers to cognitive-behavior intervention for depression. Rehabilitation Psychology, 50(4), 346-356.

Design Focus groups

Purpose Purpose of this study was to investigate themes associated with greater acceptance of programs by rural caregiver populations

Procedure The study was supported by a grant initiative: Alzheimer's Rural Care Health line. The data from preliminary focus group findings were investigated. Groups identified specific caregiver educational and skills-training requirements and best methods for soliciting referrals from rural health providers, community elder care agencies, and churches.

Outcomes Themes emerged from focus groups: trust, privacy issues, and the stigma associated with dementia. Programs recognizing these factors may be more acceptable, and more frequently used by rural populations. Sustainability may increase as well.
