Design Quasi-experiment Purpose The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a family caregiver-focused intervention program (CARE) on the outcomes of hospitalized older adults and their family caregivers. Hypothesis CARE will have a positive effect on caregivers' depressive symptoms and their participation in the care of their hospitalized family members. Participants The participants N= 49 were family caregivers of hospitalized older adults. Outcome / Dependent Variables Emotional coping, anxiety (measured on STAI), worry, depression were some of the dependent variables in this study. Procedure There were two components in the intervention: family members participated in family caregiving activities during hospitalization; audiotaped information was offered to family members regarding emotional responses and possible complications associated with an elderly patient's hospitalization as well as instructions for effectively participating in the elder's hospital care. The control program consisted of information about hospital services and policies.
