Psychosocial interventions to reduce depressive symptoms of dementia caregivers: A randomized clinical trial comparing two approaches

Citation Farran, C., Gilley, D., McCann, J., Bienias, J., Lindeman, D. & Evans, D. (2004). Psychosocial interventions to reduce depressive symptoms of dementia caregivers: A randomized clinical trial comparing two approaches. Journal of Mental Health and Aging, 10(4), 337-350

Design Randomized clinical trial

Participants The participants of this study were N=295 caregivers of Alzheimer's disease patients.

Outcome / Dependent Variables Caregiver depression was measured on the CES-D scale.

Procedure There were two levels of intervention: The Caregiver Skill Intervention included 5 group sessions designed to build caregiver skills to manage behavioral symptoms of dementia, 7 individual phone contacts, 2 group booster sessions and as-needed phone contacts. The Information and Support Oriented Intervention provided generalized info & support (comparison group), 7 individual phone contacts, 2 group booster sessions and as-needed phone contacts.

Outcomes Depression scores significantly improved in both intervention conditions but there was no difference in efficacy between interventions.
