Belated Discovery (Heritage Day Health Centers)

Belated Discovery (BD) is an outgrowth of the Music and Art Therapy Programs that are conducted at the Heritage Day Health Centers in Ohio, through the Livingston Center.

Organization:

Heritage Day Health Centers

Since 1984, Heritage Day Health Centers (HDHC) has provided a nursing home alternative to the frail elderly and disabled. HDHC is the largest provider of adult day services in Ohio.

Location:

Columbus, Ohio

How does it work?

Belated Discovery(BD) conducts two creative projects, approximately 4 months each, through the Livingston Center at HDHC. Recent projects included a production of The Wizard of Oz musical in collaboration with a local Boys and Girls Club and a Client Art Show that was featured at the Livingston Center, Ohio State House and The Columbus Public Library.

Why is it successful?

Belated Discovery is underpinned by Montessori programming adapted to older adults with dementia. Montessori programming emphasizes encouragement for the completion of even the simplest tasks, while Belated Discovery offers the unique opportunity to maximize such recognition with applause and praise. Belated Discovery has heightened the level of community awareness by lessens the stigma attached to the elderly and promotes adult day services as an alternative in elder care.
