In 2007, the Sport and Art Educational Foundation (SAEF) was established as a certified non-profit 501(c)(3) organization designed to serve the community as a multi-purpose facility to benefit the lives of 1) developmentally and physically disabled children, 2) "at-risk" children from low income families, and 3) the growing population of seniors and baby boomers whose lives have become sedentary and inactive. SAEF Alzheimer's Pilot Program was established in April, 2010 and the agency's first Alzheimer's participant began their "table tennis therapy" in May, 2010. Location: Los Angeles, California How does it work? Sport and Art Educational Foundation employs table tennis as a treatment and rehabilitation therapy for Alzheimer's and dementia. Why is it successful? By playing the game, under any conditions, an overall state of heightened awareness is stimulated - requiring both thought and physical alertness. Tennis table is seen as an innovative way to engage Alzheimer's individuals. The contributions that tennis table has with Alzheimer's individuals is an area that is understudied.
