The California Caregiver Resource Centers, the Statewide Resources Consultant, and the Department of Mental Health met throughout the year to craft the strategic plan for the CRC system effective July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2003.

The CRC system is a dynamic statewide network of 11 nonprofit caregiving resource centers, their respective Boards of Directors and Advisory Committees, and the Statewide Resources Center established by the Department of Mental Health under The Comprehensive Act for Families and Caregivers of Brain-Impaired Adults. Family Caregiver Alliance serves as the San Francisco Bay Area California Caregiver Resource Center, as well as the Statewide Resources Consultant.

Consistent with the mission statement (…the CRC system helps families and communities master the challenges of caring for persons with brain impairing conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke, Parkinson's and traumatic brain injury…) highlights of the system-wide goals are as follows:

  • Advocate for using the National Family Caregiver Support Program resources to maximum benefit for California caregivers, by assuming a leadership and advocacy role at state and local levels to advance the understanding of family caregivers and the resources needed to serve them.
  • Advance the use of technology for the benefit of the CRC system and the caregivers it serves, by maximizing the use of electronic media, e.g., the Internet, and the implementation of a comprehensive client recording system, to further benefit the information and service needs of caregivers.
  • Develop a strategy for managing growth of the CRC system, by strengthening existing management and administrative infrastructure and exploring new cost-effective options for ongoing system growth.
  • Build on best practices to expand service options and innovative programs by researching and evaluating the feasibility of replicating successful national and CRC psycho-educational groups, especially those addressing underserved communities, throughout the CRC system.
  • Demonstrate CRC program effectiveness through caregiver outcomes by continuing to implement the recommendations of the Performance Outcome Task Force and analyzing CRC system data.
  • Increase CRC system visibility and develop consistent "brand identity" at the state and local levels, by conducting a statewide education campaign to promote the visibility of the CRC system.

Caregiving Fact: A full two-thirds of working caregivers providing assistance to a family member or friend aged 65+ decreased their work hours or took unpaid leave in order to meet their caregiving duties. See FCA's Policy Brief, Caregiving and Retirement Planning, for more information.
