The impact of respite use on nursing home placement

Citation Kosloski, K. & Montgomery, R. (1995). The impact of respite use on nursing home placement. The Gerontologist, 35(1), 67-74.

Design randomized trial - reanalysis

Participants The participants of this study were N=181 caregiver/care receiver dyads

Outcome / Dependent Variables The dependent variables were: Caregiver need (self-rated health, burden, amt of time spent assisting elder), Quality of caregiving relationship, and Care receiver's level of dependence was a co-variate.

Procedure Caregivers were able to choose between 4 types of respite: short-term nursing home stay, adult day care, home health aide, or visiting nurse.

Outcomes As respite use increased, the probability of nursing home placement decreased significantly, even after controlling for other variables including elder's age and level of disability, presence of Alzheimer's and use of other support services.
