Procedure Caregivers were able to choose between 4 types of respite: short-term nursing home stay, adult day care, home health aide, or visiting nurse. Outcomes As respite use increased, the probability of nursing home placement decreased significantly, even after controlling for other variables including elder's age and level of disability, presence of Alzheimer's and use of other support services.
