Consumer-Directed Home Care: Effects on Family Caregivers (2004)

This policy brief provides an overview of the trend toward consumer-directed home care in the context of family caregiving. It explains three common models of consumer-directed policies and programs; the advantages of consumer-directed services; the role of family caregivers in consumer-directed care models as representatives for the care recipients and, in some cases, as the paid care provider; the prevalence of consumer-directed care options in public programs and private insurance; research findings on the effects of consumer-direction on family caregivers; and concerns about consumer-directed care.
