Meeting the long-term care needs of the baby boomers: How changing families will affect paid helpers and institutions (2007)

The data in this report are from the 2002 Health and Retirement Study. This study projects to 2040 the number of people aged 65 and older with disabilities and their use of long-term care services. Within the context of changing demographics - growing number of adults with chronic conditions and long-term care needs, smaller family size, more women in the workforce, etc., this report discusses the potential result that the availability of family caregiving will decrease and the need for formal home care services will increase. The simulations show that even under the most optimistic scenario long-term care burdens on families and institutions will increase substantially.
