As the Bay Area Caregiver Resource Center, Family Caregiver Alliance offers a full array of services for family caregivers. With assistance in care planning available from our expert family consultants, and respite assistance provided by our menu of programs, caregivers find themselves enhancing their own sense of well-being while providing the best care possible for their loved ones.
FCA's caregiver classes and support groups offer more specialized skill-building and emotional support, which can be especially helpful in managing feelings of frustration and understanding different approaches to difficult behaviors. But what if you need a little more help? For family caregivers who can benefit from some additional one-on-one emotional support and problem-solving assistance, FCA offers counseling from licensed clinicians with in-depth training and years of experience.
FCA's counseling program for caregivers is designed to respond to feelings of depression identified by many family caregivers we have worked with over the years. The counseling program is short-term, offering six to eight sessions focused on issues related to the role of the family caregiver. In the first session, the family caregiver is invited to establish what his or her personal goals are in working with the counselor. Over the next five to seven sessions, the counselor works with the caregiver to build skills, adapt new caregiving behaviors to increase feelings of competence, and to practice self-care.
The counselor also provides the emotional support necessary to manage feelings of grief, loss and guilt. Counseling provides an opportunity to do some in-depth exploring of available options and to get some assistance in making difficult decisions. Other members can be included for one or two sessions as needed, to clarify the needs of the caregiver and the person being cared for and to help resolve different approaches to decision-making. FCA offers counseling for caregivers in private offices located throughout the Bay Area. Six to eight sessions are offered for a sliding scale fee per session.
