Essential Information for ALS Caregivers and Professionals
SAN FRANCISCO--1/16/02-- Caregiving: What You Need to Know, a conference for ALS Caregivers and Professionals, will be held Saturday, February 9 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at UCSF's Laurel Heights Conference Center in San Francisco. Registration is free of charge for caregivers; the cost for professionals is $35.
The conference is sponsored by Family Caregiver Alliance and the ALS Association, Bay Area Chapter, in collaboration with the Forbes Norris ALS Research Center.
Each year, more than 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." A progressive, incurable and ultimately fatal disease, ALS eventually causes complete paralysis while leaving the mind unaffected.
At this conference, psychologists, physical therapists, social workers and doctors will address topics such as deciphering VA and Medicare Benefits; finding and keeping in-home help; understanding diet and personal care requirements; making difficult care-related decisions; coping with the challenges ALS presents to the family; and current treatment and research.
Family Caregiver Alliance services include information, publications, educational programs, care planning consultations, respite assistance, research and program development.
