Family Caregiver Alliance Launches
Support Group for HD Families
SAN FRANCISCO--12/12/01-- Family Caregiver Alliance is pleased to announce a new online support group for those suffering from Huntington's disease and other movement disorders.
The new support group focuses on the concerns of individuals, family members, friends and professionals involved with HD or other movement disorders, such as Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis or Freidreich's Ataxia.
Participants will find the group a supportive environment in which to share experiences, resources, information and ideas with others facing similar challenges. Participation is free, available 24 hours a day, and open to an international audience. The group is made possible by funding from the California Department of Mental Health.
According to group facilitator Joan Rademacher, R.N., “An online support group provides an opportunity for all - affected persons, family members, caregivers -to interact with others in similar situations, no matter what the weather, time of day, or their level of fatigue may be.” Rademacher has cared for a husband and four children with Huntington's disease, an incurable, hereditary disorder of the central nervous system characterized by a progressive loss of control of body movements, intellectual functioning, and emotional control.
Founded in 1977, Family Caregiver Alliance is a nationally-recognized information center on long-term care and the lead agency in California's system of statewide Caregiver Resource Centers. Services include information, publications, educational programs, care planning consultations, respite assistance, research and program development.
