Camp for Caring

Printer-friendly version

FCA’s Camp for Caring is a retreat for adults with Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and other brain impairments. Campers spend a weekend (Friday to Sunday) in a retreat setting while their caregivers can enjoy a 48-hour break from their caregiving responsibilities.

Family and partner caregivers often express a need for respite in their own homes without caregiving responsibilities. Camp for Caring offers such an opportunity while the care receiver experiences an enjoyable weekend with one-on-one volunteers, paid professionals, and an on-site registered nurse who provide close supervision and around-the-clock care.

“Awesome weekend! My mother remembered some of the activities they did and according to the staff did very well. First night she was having a hard time adjusting, but forgot that I was not there and fell asleep. ... For me, it was the first time I slept in my own bed and slept late in a year and a half. I was nervous, but it was so very nice. If it wasn’t for FCA this experience could not have happened—for both my mother and myself. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

FCA has offered Camp for Caring for over 20 years and its success can be attributed to the camp’s AAAs: Activity, Affection, and Attention. Camp activities are highly structured and include time outdoors, arts and crafts, singing and dancing, low-impact exercises, group games, and hand massages.

Most caregiver respite models require the caregiver to leave while a hired attendant comes into the home to provide care. In this model, attendants provide care at the camp, giving the care receiver the opportunity to socialize with others and be cared for in a retreat setting.

“We wanted to thank you and the staff for putting on such a wonderful camp!  Our Mom had a wonderful time. As we arrived to pick her up, her face was glowing and she chatted animatedly about how wonderful camp was as we drove home. She proudly showed the certificate she got for “Best Female Olympian.” She held it and read every line aloud to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Camp for Caring is available to FCA’s San Francisco Bay Area caregiver clients. For more information and to be added to the wait list, please call (415) 434-3388, and ask to speak with our Education Coordinator, Calvin Hu.
