Challenges of Aging and Caregiving in the LGBT Community: a Guide for Providers and Professionals

In this webinar, we will discuss some of the important issues/challenges of LGBT aging and caregiving related to financial security, healthcare, and autonomy. We will offer guidance on how service providers can employ more sensitive language when asking clients personal questions and recognize that caregivers of LGBT older adults can be friends, neighbors, and families of choice.

Many LGBT seniors live with the trauma of rejection from family and society. It is important for service providers to understand how caregiving is done in the LGBT older community, and to insure that an LGBT-welcoming safe space is provided for older LGBT adults and people who care for them to come forward and seek services. It is not uncommon for LGBT aging adults to be fearful that they will be treated differently by service providers, with many choosing to retreat back into a closet they fought so hard to come out of.  Please join us in understanding the needs of LGBT older adults and the unique challenges of LGBT caregiving.

Objectives:

  1. Provide historical reference for the disparity, discrimination, and marginalization that LGBT older adults have experienced in order to provide context to service providers when working with LGBT aging adults and the people who care for them.
  2. Discuss issues/challenges of LGBT aging and caregiving.
  3. Provide guidance on how to best support and honor the work that LGBT caregivers provide to LGBT aging adults community as well as non-LGBT community (family members).

Speaker: Sylvia Vargas

Sylvia Vargas relocated to the Bay area in 2011 to be closer to family and fulfill her dream of finishing her degree in social work. Sylvia describes this time as transforming because going back to school full time allowed her the ability to become a dedicated volunteer at Meals on Wheels, Institute on Aging’s Friendship Line and Openhouse in support of older adults. She is dedicated to advocating for and working with diverse populations especially the aging and capable LGBTQ community. Sylvia is now the Caring Connections Friendly Visitor Program Manager at Openhouse where she actively recruits, screens, and trains volunteers who are committed to giving back to LGBT older adults who have gone before them. Sylvia matches volunteers with isolated LGBT seniors to provide ongoing companionship and emotional support. In addition, Sylvia moderates the LGBT Caring Community Online Support group that is presented in partnership with Family Caregiver Alliance and Openhouse. The online group offers a safe place for LGBT caregivers of adults with chronic health problems to discuss the issues of caring for their partners, friends and family members.
