Keeping Safe From Financial Fraud

According to research cited by the Department of Justice, elderly victims lose $2.9 billion per year to financial exploitation. The purpose of this webinar is to help caregivers identify the signs of elder and dependent adult financial abuse, understand common strategiesby phone and in personthat scammers use to take advantage of their victims, and empower caregivers to protect the finances of their loved ones.


  1. Know the signs of elder and dependent adult abuse (specifically, financial abuse).
  2. Know where to report suspicions of elder and dependent adult financial abuse.
  3. Learn steps family caregivers and their loved ones can take to protect themselves against financial abuse and related predatory practices.

Speaker: Nicole Fernandez

Nicole Fernandez currently serves as the training and outreach specialist for the Elder and Dependent Adult Protection Team (EDAPT) of San Mateo County, California. EDAPT is a collaboration between San Mateo County’s Aging and Adult Services division, District Attorney’s Office, County Counsel’s Office, and local law enforcement tasked with preventing and prosecuting elder and dependent adult abuse. Nicole joined EDAPT at the end of 2015 after a decade-long career with the California State Legislature where she specialized in community relations, senior services, veterans, and health policy. She has a B.A. in political science from San Jose State University and is in the process of earning her Master’s in Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
