Preparing for the Changing Horizon: Dementia Awareness and Caregiving for LGBT Older Adults from Diverse Communities

Description: The one-day interactive educational program is about dementia care and caregiving for diverse Lesbian /Gay/Bisexual/ Transgender, older adults. The emphasis in on person-centered assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of dementia in diverse LGBT older adults, management of mental health challenges to LGBT older adult caregivers’ and care receivers’ well-being, practical approaches to communication, family, and cultural issues related to team-based health care, behavioral and alternative interventions for dementia related symptoms, and how to recognize, access, and use effectively healthcare/social service resources in mainstream and LGBT welcoming institutions. Experts in aging and dementia care will join panels of LGBT older adults from diverse communities as they share their experiences with dementia as caregivers, health care consumers, health/service providers, and as an open or undisclosed member of the LGBT community. The intended participants include LGBT older adult caregivers and care receivers with cognitive loss, from diverse communities, their families, friends, healthcare/social service providers and policy makers.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the participant would be able to:

  1. List at least two symptoms of early dementia in LGBT older adults from diverse populations.
  2. Explain briefly the benefits of person-centered assessment and diagnostic procedures to LGBT older adult caregiver, the care partner, family, and service providers.
  3. Identify pharmacologic and behavioral interventions commonly used to manage cognitive changes, depression, agitation and other behavioral symptoms of dementia.
  4. Describe cultural beliefs and practices about dementia that are important to integrate into the team-based management of emotional and psychological issues experienced by the LGBT caregiver, the care receiver and the family.
  5. Describe a strategy for accessing and using effectively LGBT affirming resources from a variety of health care/social service settings.
