Webinar: Palliative Care 101
Palliative Care 101
What is it? Who needs it? Why is it important? Where do we get it?
Palliative care helps to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for individuals with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. It addresses the medical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the individual and their family throughout the entire course of an illness, as well as at the end of life. However, palliative care is often misunderstood.
In this webinar, participants will get an in-depth explanation of what palliative care really means, why it is so important, and what family caregivers need to know about it. Presenter Judith Redwing Keyssar is a registered nurse, palliative care director, and author of Last Acts of Kindness: Lessons for the Living From the Bedsides of the Dying.* The webinar will also address some of the common myths and misconceptions about palliative care, why palliative care can play an important role in caring for a person with dementia, and the value of advance care planning.
- Provide an overview of what “palliative care” is and why it is important
- Address common myths and misunderstandings about palliative care
- Identify steps to take and helpful resources for family caregivers
Speaker: Judith Redwing Keyssar
Judith Redwing Keyssar has been intimately involved with palliative care for over two decades. Her intention in becoming a nurse was to be a “midwife to the dying” by caring for the critically and terminally ill. As her career evolved from oncology to critical care, hospice, and finally palliative care, her own cancer diagnosis thrust her into the world of her patients’ experiences, facing her own mortality.
Redwing currently serves as the Director of a unique community-based palliative care program at Jewish Family and Children’s Services’ Seniors At Home in San Francisco. She is also an author, teacher, national presenter, and frequent contributor to the public debate about palliative care.
