Creativity & Aging Webinar: Creativity, Communication and Dementia

This webinar took place in December 6, 2011.

Two professionals in the aging field, Drs. Gay Hanna and Anne Basting, discuss (1) the importance of increasing awareness among arts and aging professionals, family caregivers and others about the link between the arts and wellness in older adults; and (2) TimeSlips, a program which has been effective with older adults with dementia.


Dr. Gay Powell Hanna is an arts administration leader with 30 years of management experience in the arts, education and health-related program services. She is the Executive Director of the National Center for Creative Aging, an interdisciplinary nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering an understanding of the vital relationship between creative expression and the quality of life for all older people. Dr. Hanna holds a Ph.D. in arts education focusing on service to people with disabilities; and an MFA.

Dr. Anne Basting is the Director of the Center on Age and Community and an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance (the focus of her Ph.D. as well), at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Basting directs the TimeSlips Creative Storytelling Project which she founded in 1998, and presents frequently on creativity and aging across the U.S. She has written extensively on issues of aging including her book, The Stages of Age: Performing Age in Contemporary American Culture.
