The “Meet Me at…” Series, developed by HOPE Dementia Support in Clark County
Washington is an innovative program that creates dementia-friendly community outings for people living with dementia (PLWD) and their care partners. The series addresses the profound isolation experienced by families affected by dementia by transforming mainstream public spaces—museums, wildlife refuges, movie theaters, and parks—into welcoming, accessible environments.

The program serves approximately 500 PLWD and 500 care partners annually through monthly events like Meet Me at the Movies, Meet Me at the Wildlife Refuge, and Meet Me at the Museum. For many, it’s the first time in months—or years—they’ve felt comfortable attending a public event. Each outing is thoughtfully structured to minimize sensory overload while maximizing opportunities for joy, connection, and dignity. Venue staff receive Dementia Friends training, and HOPE Ambassadors provide on-site support to ensure families feel comfortable and included.

The program’s impact is evident through powerful testimonials. Care partners report seeing their loved one’s smile, sing, and engage for the first time in months. During one wildlife refuge event, a Native American flute performance reached a woman with advanced dementia, creating a rare moment of profound presence and peace. Another participant who attended a local beer brewery history exhibit recalled memories of his father for the first time in years. The exhibit became more than a collection of artifacts—it became a bridge to the past, a catalyst for storytelling, laughter, and connection.
Beyond individual impact, the series is building a more dementia-friendly community. Local venues have embraced inclusive programming, extended the initiative’s reach and reducing stigma. The program offers a replicable model for communities nationwide, affirming that PLWD and their care partners deserve opportunities to thrive through shared experiences and meaningful connection in every part of a community.
