"Those with dementia are still people and they still have stories and they still have character and they're all individuals and they're all unique. And they just need to be interacted with on a human level."

-Carey Mulligan (actress)

This month FCA is participating in A Walk to End Alzheimer's in San Francisco. So many of our caregiver clients are caring for someone affected by Alzheimer's or another type of dementia and we commend them for the important work that they do each and every day. In this issue of Connections, you will find several upcoming classes and events for caregivers, including one's that cater to managing the challenging behaviors associated with Alzheimer's and other various types of dementia.

*If you are no longer a caregiver and/or would not like to receive these monthly updates, please respond to this email and let us know that you'd like to be taken off of our mailing list, thank you!*

Research Opportunities For You

Do you have a family member who is near the end of life, and who lives away from you?
Oxford Brookes University - 09/12/2014

Oxford Brookes University is conducting a study exploring the views and experiences of people who have a family member nearing the end of life who lives away from them, making visits difficult, whether in a different town, state, or even a different country.

The views and experiences of distance caregivers are an under-researched area. This is why we need volunteers for a short online survey, so that we can learn what people who are providing support to such a relative need.

This study is part of a PhD at Oxford Brookes University (UK) and has been approved by England's National Health Service (NHS) Research Ethics Committee. All responses will be treated as strictly confidential and later anonymised.

If you would like to learn more about this study, or know someone who might, please follow this link:, or email the Chief Investigator Carolina at [email protected].

Young Adults as Family Caregivers

Participation involves a 60 to 90 minute telephone interview and providing feedback on preliminary research findings via email. Participants will also receive a $25 check. Smart-Home Technology and caregiving - Monitoring and Visualizing Sensor Data
University of Washington - 09/12/2014

Are you a family caregiver and interested in Smart-Home Technology?

A Smart-Home can be considered as a dwelling fitted out with sensor technology that observes the residents. It can reduce the amount of work for health providers or family caregivers. Monitoring, visualizing and making this data accessible for each party involved can give insights into the activities and the overall wellbeing of the residents.

We are conducting an online survey that will help develop a user-friendly application for visualizing sensor data for older adults and their caregivers.
