Let’s Get Away Together: Where Caregivers Can Be Themselves
August 8, 2025
Between appointments, medications and the daily labor of caring for another, we caregivers rarely have time for ourselves—or to connect with others who “get” our experience. Now, we can relax and enjoy exactly that, in Let’s Get Away Together, a free weekly online gathering hosted by Family Caregiver Alliance and The Hummingbird Project. “It’s my hour to just be normal,” said program lead Alicia Harris. “We actually just get to be here and be people, with people who get it.”
A Space to Come as You Are
Each week, Let’s Get Away Together takes participants on an engaging virtual journey. Together, we travel to ancient civilizations, natural wonders and hidden cultural gems. We share music, storytelling and imagery to bring each topic to life. The atmosphere is fun, casual, welcoming and pressure-free.
“You don’t have to do your hair to come to the group,” said Alicia. “You can just be there.” Cameras can stay off, and silence is fine. “We have regulars that I’ve never seen, and that’s perfectly fine. They’re there, they’re enjoying it, and they keep coming back.”
Not a Support Group, But Still Supportive
The heart of what makes Let’s Get Away Together special is that it’s light, uplifting, and fun—yet grounded in our shared experience. “It’s that sweet spot,” said Hummingbird Project manager Meredith Eden. “You can be in a judgment-free space. You’re met with something fun, something interesting and everyone there just knows what you’re going through, even if you never say it out loud.”
Our shared understanding makes all the difference. “You could go out with friends and talk about caregiving,” said Alicia. “But they might not really get it. Here, you can just be yourself, and everyone around you understands, even if you’re just talking about jellyfish.”
Community-Curated, Lasting Adventures
The program’s content is dynamic and driven in large part by attendees. “We now have participants helping shape the content,” said Alicia. “It’s really become theirs.” Weekly topics are curated with care, featuring themes that spark curiosity and joy. “We try to find the weird facts, the things that catch people. It’s not just what you can Google. It’s the fun, interesting stuff you’d want to tell someone about afterward.”
After each session, participants receive an email with follow-up resources: curated articles, links, visuals, and ideas to continue exploring at home. “You might be doing dishes or answering a call while your loved one watches the video we sent,” said Meredith. “That’s the kind of flexibility caregivers need.”
Still Showing Up, Years Later
Over the years, the group has naturally evolved into a gathering space primarily for caregivers—many of whom keep attending even after their loved one has passed away. “Once you’re a caregiver, you’re always a caregiver,” Meredith said. “This is still their community.”
Some participants have been with the program for years. Others drop in when they can. Many stay off-camera, and that’s okay. “Everyone gets to engage at their own pace,” said Alicia.
