A Caregiver’s Guide to Managing Challenging Dementia Behavior: An Online Learning Series

Welcome!

This video learning series is comprised of three classes:

  1. Understanding Dementia
  2. Understanding and Communicating with Someone with Dementia
  3. Understanding and Responding to Problem Behavior.

For each class, you’ll see the learning objectives and then links to the class modules. We recommend that you watch the video modules in order because the information builds module by module. However, you may also chose the modules that interest you, as well.

Classes

Class 1: Understanding Dementia

In this class, you’ll learn about:

  • Dementia and its causes
  • How the different causes of Dementia affect people
  • The conditions that may mimic dementia
  • The differences between dementia-related cognitive changes and normal age-related changes
  • The importance of obtaining a diagnosis

Class 2: Understanding and Communicating with Someone with Dementia

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Better understand and communicate with a person with dementia by identifying the losses he or she experiences
  • Recognize and work with the abilities that he or she retains
  • Understand and be aware of your own feelings—like grief, loss, and denial
  • Apply useful principles and tips when you communicate with a person with dementia.

Class 3: Understanding and Responding to Problem Behavior
