The New York University Caregivers Program started in 1987 and has gone through various phases. Since its inception, the program has focused on diminishing the negative impacts and increases the positive supportive elements of family caregiving. How does it work?
Today the New York University Caregivers Program focuses on family counseling sessions, support groups and ad hoc as-needed counseling for spousal caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Why is it successful?
Numerous evaluations of the program show marked impact on development of successful coming mechanisms for caregivers dealing with behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Additional findings report to delayed nursing home placement for the person with Alzheimer’s disease without diminishing caregiver well-being. Moreover, in recognition of the program’s success it has been the recipient of several national awards.
